Sirigu, a captivating village, stands as a testament to the resilience and initiative of local women dedicated to preserving their art and cultural heritage. Renowned for its exquisite pottery, intricate basketry, unique architecture, and adorned with decorative wall paintings, Sirigu offers a rich tapestry of traditional skills.

In response to the imminent loss of these cherished traditions due to the departure of many young women seeking employment opportunities, seven visionary women from Sirigu founded SWOPA (Sirigu Women’s Organisation for Pottery and Art). This transformative initiative aimed to impart the intricate knowledge of traditional crafts to local women while also facilitating the marketing of their products.

Since its inception, SWOPA has blossomed, now boasting a membership of over 350 women. To showcase the fruits of their labor and provide a platform for cultural exchange, SWOPA has established a multifaceted complex. This includes a visitor center, gallery, workshop, and guesthouse where visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant world of Sirigu’s traditional crafts.

Visitors to this cultural haven are treated to an array of functional pottery and baskets, each telling a unique story embedded in Sirigu’s cultural heritage. The intricate designs and craftsmanship reflect not only the artistic prowess of the creators but also the deep cultural roots from which these traditions spring.
