24 Mar World Recipe: Potato Hash Browns
Hash Browns are delicious potato croquettes or pancakes that are mixed with wheat flour, egg, spices, and then fried until they have a golden and crispy exterior. This preparation is very versatile and can be made in various ways, but the most traditional method involves using grated potato, which gives them a unique texture and irresistible flavor.

Ingredients:
- 3 large potatoes
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: 1 egg

Preparation:
- Peel the potatoes with a peeler and wash them under the tap. Grate them using a grater, using the coarsest part to obtain thin strips of potato, similar to julienne. It’s important not to grate them too finely to avoid them turning into a puree.
- Drain the grated potatoes very well to remove all excess water. Place them in a colander, press with your hands, and then dry with a clean cloth. This step is crucial to achieve crispy Hash Browns.
- Season the grated potatoes with salt and pepper to taste and mix well. If desired, you can add a beaten egg to help the patties bind better, but this is optional and not part of the original recipe.
- Heat a little oil in a non-stick frying pan. Once hot, form the patties with your hands or using a spoon to shape them. It’s important that the patties have a uniform thickness so that they cook evenly.
- Fry the patties until golden and crispy on both sides, turning them carefully to ensure even cooking. The heat should be at medium temperature to ensure the potatoes cook properly.
- Drain the Hash Browns on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Serve hot as a side dish for an English breakfast or as part of a delicious brunch.
